Willemijn De Greef

Willemijn de Greef is not a jewelry artist whose purpose is making wearable pieces. Instead she works prinicipally on the socio-cultural aspect of jewelry. How jewelry is viewed throughout generations and within a certain culture.

Her first exhibition at the gallery was about how jewelry was worn on special occasions in the community of fishermen from the South of Holland where she originates from. Jewelry worn for special occasions, for mourning, to celebrate a new boat.

Her second exhibition at the gallery was together with Seon Yu KIm from Korea and touched upon the differences between jewelry of Korean courtesans and jewelry with elements from this South Netherlands fisherman community. A contrast of purpose and meaning of jewelry within these two very distinct cultures and types of women.

Her materials of choice remain most certainly glass, ceramic, rope and metals like copper, bronze, silver and gold.
