Gijs Bakker

(NL, 1942)

Gijs Bakker and his late wife Emmy van Leersum set the stage for groundbreaking jewelry back in the 60's. Their movement went against classic ideals of beauty and precious metals ruling over jewelry. Gijs Bakker continued to create various series of work where both humor and a gentle provocation set the tone. All his activities, founder of Droog Design, head teacher at the Design Academy of Eindhoven and creating iconic jewelry works have given his name international acclaim and pieces in permanent museums worldwide as true artworks.
In 2016 Gijs Bakker was made member of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences and Art).
