shifting context - Willemijn de greef

For Willemijn de Greef, jewelry conveys emotions. When emotions are intense, jewelry becomes big; if emotions are overwhelming, jewelry can turn into sculptural pieces.

Introduced at an early age by her grandmother to the pleasure of collecting and wearing jewerly, De Greef grew up surrounded by arts and crafts lovers and makers. The lasting impact this up-breeding had on her imagination and on her visual vocabulary is revealed and highlighted in her new body of works Shifting Context.

The new series has been triggered by a shift that occurred in her family, whereby Willemijn lost her grandmother and became a mother herself. A change in generation, a new distribution of roles that let appear new connections, new strengths and new frailties, that she expresses through jewelry inspired sculptures.
